Exponential vs. Finite … possible implications

Might it be time in for man no matter where on this planet we call – “mother earth” – he currently dwells to consider the implications of a world population increasing exponentially while relying upon a finite source of water…?

Interestingly man, especially in America, thus far has been able to cast aside any invitation to consider the implications of the path we currently walk respecting the finite nature of water. Literally we are able to daily pay no heed as increasingly water is degraded by our acts. All evidence suggesting man plays an impacting role in water’s revolving cycle is steadfastly cast aside disparaged unmercifully.

Yet the fact remains – water – is finite while world population grows exponentially, sustainable this is not. This seems perverse as the two most important ingredients required by man to survive air and water remain off our current radar screens, relegated most often to be fostered by those we tend to view as on the fringe. You know what I mean, those most often labeled, nut-cases, tree huggers, greenies, contemptible environmentalists, obstructionists, do-gooders and all the rest Most often what they espouse, can only be seen through that lens, as those we are asking to receive, can only perceive through one lens that of unrestricted growth.

MAGIC LINE

Increasingly I find myself asking where or if there is a magic line in the sand clearly delineating the differences between a life lived in the community of “I” (alone) as opposed to a life lived in the community of “we” (you/us) …?

We arrive on this earth plane in this incarnation in a nuclear family environment wherein its composition is facilitated through adhering to a family belief in either “I” or “we” as possessing fundamental power. Being born in the USA adds a historical dimension as our public funded education enforces a cardinal belief in the power of the individual.

Notably absent in the education provided, at least in my generation (1943 – war baby) is full disclosure of folks such as John D. Rockefeller, Sam Walton, Phil Knight, John Jacob Astor, John Pierpont Morgan, Charles Merrill, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, Edward H. Harriman, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to cite but a few and the business ethic or paradigm they utilized as they amassed their respective financial empires…?

When viewed through the lens of is it I or is it we, in the case of each of those noted above I respectfully suggest they adhere the philosophy is it – I. A trait common to each of them is their insatiable individual appetite so only crumbs remain for the “we.” They are often held up in our educational system as the pillars and the examples to which one in the USA might chose to aspire, and indeed one could honestly note they represent and epitomize the power of the individual. While recognizing their individual prowess no mention is made of how they achieved their financial empire.

Safely off the table for discussion and shielded from prying eyes and ears is any discussion of those they trampled into the ground, abused, crushed, summarily discarded, pushed ruthlessly aside as they rose to the top of the pinnacle of financial success and upon a pedestal placed. Truly they do honestly epitomize the I, while being most cavalier about the we.

AMALGUM OF FEAR

The fundamental mass media message is an amalgam of FEAR be afraid, be very afraid. The message fostered by TV talking heads, many blogs, twitter users, government propaganda messengers is an authentic blatant use of FEAR, reinforced solely with words recession, depression, unprecedented collapse, leading to global devastation…?

And some how receiving 24/7 vestiges of this message in its many forms “we” are to see, feel, hear there is a positive bright light at the end of this tunnel…? I don’t believe it will, in fact what will evolve is folks will stick and bury their heads further in the sand trying anything to get away but knowing not where they can turn.

Americans, I find, are fundamentally afraid of change. We love the word and its attributes but we truly fear what is required of each of us to attain any real, meaningful, significant – change. It’s too hard, too emotional, takes too long, incurs too much pain, so on second thought I’ll just bitch and do nothing.

In teasing taunting manner we are hauntingly shown a path a way out of these dilemmas “we” permitted to be inflicted upon us, but, when it comes to the time to either put up or shut up, we usually choose the latter, grovel and live in fear.

What we face is a recession, depression, collapse based entirely on FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN and nothing else and those manipulating pulling our stings are sitting back laughing their asses off at our individual and collective stupidity.

Forrest Gump was right … stupid is as stupid does …. but we can change all that in less than a New York minute … so what’s stopping us, you guessed it – fear.
