Content to remain ever the ostrich

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . .

Is it just me or do you find when you track the location of those libraries and senior centers our Phoenix City Council is proposing to close to balance its budget again they choose to balance it on the backs of those least able to afford it and those with either the smallest voice or no voice … those of color, poor and disenfranchised…?

Reading this headline along with the action taken by those 90 mental midgets we elected to represents us in our state legislature currently touting their House bill as spurring job creation, though this action was taken behind our back, again denying our participation and being given the opportunity to ask questions and hold them accountable.

Arizona according to all published reports is FINANCIALLY BROKE yet there is movement in legislature to accommodate Mesa, Az to enable they so they might keep the Chicago Cubs spring training in their city, while on the other hand, these same legislators slash funding for education, health and mental care, while continuing to allow ADEQ to turn its head and not enforce its rules and laws they chose to ram down your throat and mine, at the behest of corporate interest$, all the while disingenuously proclaiming our WATER is safe…?

On the other hand, rich, white Arizona and the power structure behind it … Governor and State Legislature … line up firmly opposed to Tohono O’Odham Native American tribe from Southern Arizona from pursuing its economic endeavors…?

When do “we” even choose to honestly address the grossly apparent inequities we continue to allow to exist, or do “we” choose to ever remain as the ostrich…?

Have legal changes put water at risk …?

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . . Although the article to follow has a Colorado flavor … the opinion offered about WATER has significant implications for Arizona…

Have legal changes put water at risk …? …by Amy Huff … Article Last Updated; Sunday, January 24, 2010 12:35AM …

In their haste to ensure the Colorado Supreme Court’s Vance vs. Wolf decision does not slow down the gas industry, the Legislature and state engineer have rewritten Colorado’s water laws, dramatically altering the historical scheme, and authorizing the state engineer to give away the nontributary water beneath landowners’ property in the interest of mining minerals.

Last April, the court held that the extraction of water – often called “produced water” – that occurs in the process of extracting coal-bed methane is a beneficial use of water, requiring a water right, which must be administered in our priority system. That ruling resulted in the Legislature revising Colorado’s statutes to give special rights to those claiming to use nontributary water for mineral purposes, in the state engineer promulgating rules that define certain areas of the groundwater in the San Juan Basin to be nontributary, and in the gas industry racing to the courthouse to adjudicate water rights for its coal-bed methane wells. These significant changes to Colorado’s water administration system should be carefully reviewed to ensure all water users are treated fairly, and to protect their property rights.

The significant implication for Arizona, I believe, is how manipulating definitions, like CAP and SRP with full cooperation of ADWR and ADEQ love to do, can significantly alter ones rights and access to water … ie … the Verde River water shed and Salt River water shed …remain with your head in an ostrich position at your own risk … transparency and disclosure is currently something you need to do for yourself as those controlling our government do not want you to know

It’s just monopoly money any way

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . .

When do we realize it’s nothing more than Monopoly Money and with perhaps even less value…?

They can raise the limit as high as they want and as fast as their printing presses can create this “funny” money.

It’s OK … keep your head in its current ostrich position, that’s exactly what they want.

Behind our backs

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . . If this honestly $pur$ job creation … then why deny “us” … that’s you and me …an opportunity to ask these Legislator$ question$…?

Have we no conscious…?

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . . How can America and its government be so psychopathic…?
To even consider sending as a gesture of “good-faith” formaldehyde-laced trailer to Haiti is demonstratively monstrous.

RAPE IS OK IN ARIZONA

One might wonder how our Governor Jan Brewer … a woman … can remain silent while her Republican compatriots vote in favor of RAPE … but then politics does make for strange bed fellows…?

The real tragedy is that one or both of these “bozos” might actually endorse this as a FRESH IDEA

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . . Quick Arizona Governor Brewer or Phoenix Mayor “Flash” Gordon … this just might be your FRESH IDEA on how you resolve your budget crisis…?

Does Kentucky Fried Chicken Own Your City’s Fire Hydrants…? …

January 14, 2010 … Alternet … by Jim Hightower … Welcome to the latest reach by commercial hucksters to cover every square inch of America the Beautiful with ads. Fire hydrants deserve more respect. They are utilitarian and ubiquitous icons of America’s urban landscape, yet they’re rarely noticed by anyone but dogs — who give them no respect whatsoever. Now, though, a brand-name corporation has noticed that these pieces of our public infrastructure are everywhere, and, like a dog, it wants to lift its leg on them!

KFC, the fast-food chicken chain owned by a global conglomerate named Yum Brands, is in search of fire hydrants it can use to “mark its territory.” In particular, the corporation wants to spray hydrants in various cities with its logo.

Welcome to the latest reach by commercial hucksters to cover every square inch of America the Beautiful with ads. Indianapolis is the first city to allow KFC to whiz on its hydrants. The company has plastered the city’s stumpy water taps with the KFC logo, plus a smiling photo of corporate founder Colonel Sanders and a slogan promoting the chain’s new “fiery” grilled chicken wings.

Pay more taxes, perhaps? Good grief, no — get out of here! … Rather, they magnanimously offered to “contribute” some money to help pay for new fire hydrants. In exchange, the grateful city officials would need to do nothing — just allow the corporation to use the hydrants as its own little billboards around town. “Helping communities,” explains a KFC vice president, is our goal. In turn, he adds, the gesture will “help us in terms of creating goodwill with consumers.”

Really…? Do these executives actually believe that spraying people’s fire hydrants with self-serving ads will make local folks feel good about a chicken chain? That delusion aside, let’s probe the terms of the deal. Exactly how magnanimous was KFC in its philanthropic gesture to help provide fire safety for Indy citizens? Get ready to be astounded: $5,000. …

That’s it! KFC reaps a PR bonanza (not only getting promotional use of the hydrants, but also a photo op featuring the mayor and fire chief meeting with an actor dressed up as Colonel Sanders). All this for what amounts to chicken feed. This is a city with a $1.2 billion annual operating budget — what’s a measly $5K going to do? Well, retorted a spokeswoman for the mayor, “it’s offsetting some of our budget costs.”

Question: How many fire hydrants will $5,000 buy? Answer: Two. … In fact, rather than blowing KFC’s paltry bit of philanthropy on a couple of hydrants, officials bought 33 fire extinguishers for recreation centers in city parks. And, yes, KFC got its logo and “fiery” wings promo on each of those extinguishers.

I realize that cities everywhere are financially squeezed, and it must be tempting for mayors to grab at any sort of quick fix. But, come on — if you’re going to sell your city’s soul to corporate hucksters, sell it for more than a nickel.

The real tragedy for Arizona is that one or both of these individuals might actually see this as a FRESH IDEA … now that really wouldn’t be surprising would it …?

You really think they want to hear from you

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . . If you really think the Phoenix City Council wants to hear from you … guess again…?

Honest and meaningful change will only occur when “we” STOP
accepting without substantive and verifiable proof mere uttering from any City Council or their employees … until then we are so screwed.
