Who are the welfare queens…?

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE .

Rachel Maddow Exposes GOP Welfare Queens Who Attacked Obama’s Stimulus, Yet Enjoyed Billions in Benefits … Alternet … 11 Feb 10 …. Excerpted … Oh the hypocrisy: Republicans have been attending ribbon cuttings for stimulus-funded projects that they voted against.

It totally makes sense in the abstract if people can agree on what needs to be done to solve the country‘s problems than those policies, even if they‘re big policies, should get votes from everyone who‘s in agreement.
In the abstract that‘s how it works. In Washington, that is not at all how it works. Republicans proposed a deficit commission. President Obama endorsed the idea so then Republicans decided they‘re against it.

Republicans proposed pay-as-you-go rules for budgeting. President Obama endorsed the idea. Then Republicans decided they were against it too. Republicans who voted for the bank bailout are now criticizing President Obama for that same bank bailout.

Republicans supported President Bush‘s policy of trying terrorism suspects in U.S. courts. Now that President Obama is implementing that same policy, they decided they‘re against that now, too.
Republicans supported a cap-and-trade policy against global warming. Now that President Obama is trying to pass that same policy, Republicans have decided – say it with me now – they‘re against that, too.

See the pattern here…? What Republicans are doing on policy is no longer interesting. It is so thoroughly unrelentingly, consistently predictable that anyone who thinks it‘s an open question as to what Republicans are going to do about the next legislation that‘s proposed just is not paying attention.

Let me be emphatic here. Let me be emphatic about one particular example, the stimulus. The stimulus passed despite every single Republican in the House voting no on it – everyone.
Since then, the consensus among economists is that stimulus has worked, even though it‘s maybe been too small. The consensus among Republicans is that it‘s been a horrible giant thing that hasn‘t done anything good at all.

I am quite sure for a number of my hard core neo-con Republican readers … mentioning the name Rachel Maddow … is akin to a matador waving a red cape in front of a charging bull … as she represents and encapsulates all the virtues of the quintessential enemy.

So don’t believe her or me, I invite you to do your own research and determine the games being played in the D.C. “beltway” by those of both colors … red and blue …

The End of Influence: What Happens When Other Countries Have America’s Money … America finds itself cash poor, and to a great extent, power follows money. A new book explores the grave consequences this loss will have for America’s place in the world. … excerpted … February 11, 2010 …

Read entire article at link to follow … http://www.alternet.org/story/145632/the_end_of_influence%3A_what_happens_when_other_countries_have_america%27s_money

For more than a quarter century now the countries of the world have been dreaming the neoliberals’ dream. They have been trying to shrink their states back to their core competencies to promote economic efficiency, global economic integration, and growth, and to slash through red tape, rent-seeking, and simple corruption. They have been actively privatizing state holdings. They have hugely reduced their ownership and their active involvement in “national champion” companies. They have cut back on interventions to affect market outcomes and on regulation to scrutinize and control market players.

America did come to the aid of its closest, cherished, and most important embattled overseas ally after Britain was broke. The Grand Alliance was the great moment in the grand story of the English-speaking nations. It does remain Churchillian in the inherited grandeur of its narrative. And America did come to the rescue of England, and together-with enormous although unloved assistance from the Red Army of the Soviet Union and Josef Stalin-America did save the world from the horrors of the Nazis. But while we were gearing up to come to the rescue, we squeezed the British, and when World War II was over, the United States, not Britain, had the money. When the British borrowed money from us, it had to be repaid in dollars, not in sterling. And imports into Britain had to be rationed well into the 1950s.

Will the United States be similarly squeezed…? No. We are not engaged in a total war. We do not domestically produce only 1,200 calories of food per citizen per day. We are still by far the world’s largest national economy. The United States is technologically powerful and resourceful and is still the center of world finance. World finance is still transacted in dollars. And the United States remains the world’s only military superpower, whatever that may turn out to mean.

But the United States is losing the money. America is now massively in debt to foreigners and will be more in debt with each passing year as far into the future as forecasters can see. It will not be squeezed as it squeezed Britain, but it will be constrained.

Back when the United States had the money, it used it to pay attention to other governments only when it chose and to make certain that other governments paid attention to the United States even when they wished to not so choose. With the Marshall Plan, America made Western Europe an offer that all but forced Western Europe to adopt the mixed-economy social-democratic order of the post-World War II North Atlantic. It financed and arranged “regime change” in lesser countries to remove governments that seemed to be veering off into serious error. In all this, the United States used the leverage of having the money exclusively for the global greater good.

Remember the above is just an opinion … is yours not just as valid …?

At some point accountable…?

PERSPECTIVE … What is NOT disclosed nor made transparent …?

Is there ever to be a time when Maricopa County Sheriff Arpaio does NOT point his finger and hold “them” accountable … will he ever accept accountability for those actions and policies he put in place…?

Moreover and more importantly when do “we” choose to hold ourselves accountable for allowing the county’s principal law enforcement agency to act so cavalier and capriciously…?

When might we choose to contemplate how “we” would react were the shoe on the other foot and a sheriff of color acted in a similar capricious manner towards his “white” constituents…?

Lest we forget at some point and at some point in time … we … are each accountable for all of our words, deeds, actions … even Joe Arpaio.

PERSPECTIVE … What is NOT disclosed nor made transparent …?

First … KUDOS … to Benson … !

While many of us may find it outside our personal “comfort-zone” the time has come for us to contemplate how acts which initially appear isolated are in fact intertwined. When our actions for the past many decades has been to play games with state budgets, allowing Enron type accounting practices, to invade and become part of Arizona’s budgeting on all levels, should we not honestly expect the frenzied position in which Arizona finds itself today…?

For far too many years, under Governors of both color -red and blue – we choose an ostrich posture allowing those we elected to utilize the age old shell game with us … and most of the time we either laughed … or zoned out in our other favorite posture … coach potato.

Until we individually make the choice to become aware it is futile for us to expect honest or meaningful change.

Yea, I know, that’s not what you wanted to hear … why isn’t it their fault…? Why can’t I point my finger and blame them…? Actually, you can to either or both and whistle “Dixie” at the same time but expecting honest or meaningful change will not happen.

But, you already know that. So the question you and I must answer individually is … “what does it look like when it’s fixed” …?

Who sacrifices…?

PERSPECTIVE … What is NOT disclosed nor made transparent …?

If the Arizona Republic wants to honestly discuss budget sacrifices … then at least get the facts straight … rich, white, select, elite Arizona corporations and individuals have NOT sacrificed one thing …

To date the sacrificing has been solely on the backs of those of color, of the poor, the disenfranchised, the lesser educated, the unemployed, the sick, the infirmed, the mentally and emotionally challenged …

True sacrificing begins only when “we” … that’s you and me … have our rightful seat at the budget table and any table where our rights are the subject of discussion.

But to get to that point … “we” … must be willing to sacrifice and give up our cherished ostrich posture and stand on our own two feet and with clarity demand and accept nothing less than full, open, time, honest disclosure and transparency from anyone in any agency of our government.

Until then we’re going to get more of what we have been given over the last several decades.

Rosemont: Mine won’t harm tourism … By Philip Franchine, Green Valley News …Published: Tuesday, February 16, 2010 7:44 PM MST ..The proposed Rosemont Copper mine in the Santa Rita Mountains would not have a major negative effect on tourism and could generate almost as many visitors as it might drive away, an Arizona State University economist told a business audience Tuesday in Tucson.

Copper mining also would provide the kind of basic or export economic activity that brings in outside money and supports retail, banking and other local businesses that essentially recirculate that money, said Research Professor Lee McPheters of the L. William Seidman Institute at ASU’s W.P.Carey School of Business.

McPheters and Scottsdale economics and real estate consultant Elliott D. Pollack spoke before a forum hosted by Rosemont Copper and sponsored by the Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce and the Tucson Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. About 150 people attended the meeting, including mining and construction industry officials.

Randy Graf, the Chamber’s Government Relations chair, said, “We’ve seen the emotional side of the issue, with the environmentalists always making front-page news. The idea behind these forums is to help get accurate information out to help make an informed decision.”

McPheters in July 2009 wrote an economic impact assessment in a study of the mine for the Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources that says, among other things, “Rosemont Copper will be an asset to the community and the nation.” … Rosemont paid for the study.

Did you honestly expect any other conclusion from a study performed by academia and paid for by the corporation which will benefit as a result of the conclusion…?

Sorry, Randy Graf and ASU professors but the disclosure and transparency provided does not meet the smell test. You gave them pabulum mixed with mining BS and called it honest …

PERSPECTIVE … What is NOT disclosed nor made transparent …?

I rise to congratulate this young innovator and the university, but I do have one question…?

Inasmuch I have spent more than 30 years in the water/wastewater industry, I wonder if it might be possible to learn just what this young innovator does with the sludge or residual which is generated via his re-cycle process…?

Generally, speaking the debris generated from the surfaces he is cleaning could contain everything from A to Z, soup to nuts, including some quite highly toxic materials.

I am hoping he will report he has developed a process which is as “green” as this newspaper article depicts the rest of his effort…? If on the other hand this sludge/residual/debris is summarily tossed into the nearest dumpster … we have a problem …!
