2010 ELECTIONS BRING THEM ON

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . .
The 2010 Elections: Bring ‘em on …! …The Huffington Post dailybrief@huffingtonpost.com … 23 Dec 09 … excerpted …

I’m looking forward to the 2010 elections. We need them. …Many dread how badly the election is shaping up. Commentators predict double digit Democratic losses in the House and further retreat from the sixty vote threshold in the Senate. We fear a progressive era strangled in its infancy.

But there’s a sunny side too. The election can bring the fight out of us. We can turn complaints about how bad things are into complaints about how we got here and how long it will take us to dig out. Like in 2008, the elections in 2010 give us an opportunity to point out the failures of long conservative reign and dare conservatives to try to take us backward.

Don’t like the deficit? Three times as much of it came from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (unpaid for) and the Bush tax cuts (without offsets) as from the Obama’s Recovery Act.

Don’t like the job situation? We lost 11,000 jobs in November. That’s bad. But we lost 533,000 jobs in November of last year, the crowning achievement of Bush’s presidency. It will take a long time to turn this around. But at least we’re turning.

Frustrated about health care reform? Me too. But don’t forget how bad it was. Health care spending rose from 13.8 percent of GDP when Bush took office to 16.6 percent last year — even as the number of uninsured grew by a million people every year. So we spent more every year but got less for it. In personal terms, the cost of a family premium more than doubled, from $5,791 in 1999 to $12,680 in 2008.
A few years ago, guaranteed, affordable health care for all was an impossible dream. Now it’s just a few votes away. Let’s thank the progressive forces that got us this far rather than assailing them for compromise. Save the attacks for the forces that compelled the compromise.

Other changes haven’t even begun to take effect. We’re beginning efforts to regulate financial markets so Wall Street serves the real economy, not the other way around. We’re taking baby steps towards energy independence, and even starting to make sure that the components of our new energy economy are made in America — so we don’t replace a dependence on foreign oil with a dependence on foreign manufacturing. We’re starting to reign in private contractors who took over public functions but left the public interest behind, especially in Afghanistan and Iraq.

We want those things to happen. All that and more. But we won’t get there if we start circling the firing squad over who’s to blame over health care reform. We know who’s to blame. Obstructionist senators, obsolete 60 vote filibuster rules, and giant corporations who buy their influence. Our deep hole comes compliments of conservative ideologues who valued private interest over the common good.
The President doesn’t talk about that much
.

In a non-election year, the leader of our great democracy chose to govern not to campaign. Senators who wanted change tried in good faith to work with Senators who preferred failure to reform. They treated gridlock like bad weather, a chance misfortune, not a deliberate strategy by the opposition party.

An election year can be different. We can bring the fight back — for the ideas and ideals that will put the government on the side of working people and heal our broken economy. The people want these changes. An election is a chance to fight. Bring it on

2010 can bring the change we seek, it’s up to us to choose …

Temporary tax, sure, what a laugh

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . .
It might be time for “us” to contemplate there is NO such thing as a temporary tax and politicians irrespective of their alleged political stripe fall in love with sales taxes. Temporary sales taxes especially always become “necessary” though their originally intended purpose morphs into what in that moment is the “hot-button” dilemma.

Sales taxes on items such as food, housing and health care in particular are characteristically unfair as they fall heaviest on those at the lower end of our financially defined society, but really the members of the Phoenix City Council don’t give a damn, because it’s a quick solution to a vexing problem.

This mushroomed city budget did not occur overnight or just last year, rather it has been in the making for years. During that time “we” … that’s you and me … chose to be deaf, dumb, silent as we are now.

Let’s see do I have this right … Phoenix city budget … big deficit … Arizona state budget … giant deficit … State economy in the toilet … Unemployment growing … solution posed by those who swore an oath “to serve & to protect” … RAISE SALES TAXES … are “we” really believe this represents FRESH IDEAS … and thinking outside the box …?

INTERNET GAMBLING IS SAFE

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . . Gambling, gaming, games of chance appear to be a part of the human experience long before we gained the ability to talk or walk on two feet.

Internet gambling again in play … Rep Barney Frank (D-Mass.), right, is working on legislation that would legalize and regulate poker, mah-jongg and other online wagering. Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.), left, vows to oppose such efforts. ..By Dan Eggen …Washington Post Staff Writer … Sunday, February 7, 2010
Poker lobbyists are ramping up an aggressive push backed by millions of dollars to legalize Internet gambling in the United States this year, hoping to overcome passionate objections from social conservatives, sports leagues and other longtime opponents.
Partly bankrolled by offshore gambling companies, the campaign has already persuaded the Obama administration to delay enforcement of a 2006 law cracking down on Internet wagers.
The fact that our President and Congress are loosening any restrictions on off-shore banking only contributes to the $uccess of gambling and enhancing the bottom line of America’s captains of commerce and owner$ of our American Congress and Presidency.

Why the need for all the rules, laws, stuff

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE . . .

If as we love to project America is, in fact, the land of the free why then are we daily subjected to literally thousands of laws, rules, regulations, stipulations, covenants, edicts, decrees and directives…?

And moreover they are quite often diametrically opposed to one another, conflicting, convoluted, contradictory, incompatible and paradoxical. And this myriad of laws are specifically designed to be most often seen and interpreted by us as somehow etched in stone, the equivalent of Ten Commandments presented to Moses or the Holy Grail. If each of these man-defined laws or rules are written to be as our – Ten Commandments – why then make them deliberately incomprehensible…?

But, here’s the question. Are they really…?

In a society wherein we each respectfully choose to be solely accountable and responsible for self, would there be need for the mechanism to administer and enforce this conglomerate which is so constructed that we choose to see it as necessary to enable this edifice to not only exist but to propagate…?

Interestingly most of us alive today in America have been educated to believe that without this smothering legacy and litany of laws and its punitive overseers our American society would collapse and utter chaos would prevail.

Again, I pose, it that really true…?

If the least bit true, and I pose it is utterly a sham, fake and bogus we see it as true only because of constant 24/7/365 bombardment of thinly veiled but ingeniously cloaked propaganda fostered by “military-industrial-congressional-corporate-banksters-interest$” designed solely to serve their want$ without the least honest concern for your or my, better immediate or long term interests.

Moreover as one examines even a meager handful of most of these laws, regulations and stipulations, we find they have been purposefully designed to … take away rights … which Americans fought to establish and upon which our embryonic nation was founded.

When one more closely scrutinizes most of these laws, rules, regulations, stipulations, covenants, edicts, decrees and directives promulgated especially in the law 40 years a common denominator presents itself for our inspection. The overwhelming majority of these promulgated laws serve only to … take rights away from you and me … and gift them to that ubiquitous artificial person – corporations – the 900# gorilla in our midst. But don’t take my word for it, I invite you to do your own investigation and draw your own conclusion.

I wonder if in the process of walking out of my door and to my vehicle, if in that simple act, I have not broken a number of inane and innocuous rules, regulations or edicts to which I am totally unaware as I was not provided full, open, honest, timely disclosure of their content or context. But in the scheme of things the very last thing the “military-industrial-congressional-corporate-banksters-interest$” want is for you or me to be AWARE as their game can only exist and hold power from behind closed doors and from dark secreted places.

Yea, I hear, you, another conspiracy nut case, so don’t pay any attention to this guy, right…? If that be your determination, so be it, go forth and blindly live according to the dictates of others being content to remain oblivious to what is true for you.

Is it conspiratorial to question why “we” … that’s you and me … can not get straight forward answers to even the most simple of questions from most currently elected governmental officials, board members or most public servants…?

Is it conspiratorial to find when one pursues and actually follows the money as Deep Throat so eloquently noted to the Washington Post reporter diligently tracking the corruption of then President Richard Nixon, today unleashed upon them are the “off-the-books-off-the-record” … black ops contingent … solely design to administer pure unmitigated fear…?

Is it conspiratorial to note the degree of terror hoisted upon anyone who dares become a “whistle-blower” as the techniques available to our government sanctioned black ops contingent can have one quickly rendition in a heart beat or meet with an untimely death…?

Gone is the unrestricted sense of freedom of the 1960’s when our streets and college campuses, in particular, were often filled with students, mothers, kids, factory worker, young, old, black, white exercising their RIGHT to FREEDOM OF SPEECH, something which today’s Americans can only read about in history books, see, if they are lucky in movies or read in novels.

Is it conspiratorial to look aghast when those reputed to be officers of the court, keepers of the peace act as they frequently do in Maricopa County, Arizona like the historical vigilantes of the old west dispensing “justice” as they alone determine…?

Is it conspiratorial to question how Arizona, a state reputedly with a devastating budget deficit can always afford to send its elected officials, especially Mayors and Governors, around the world to seminars, conferences, meetings in either private air craft or first class air lines, with limos and five star hotel to entertain them, but is unable to find adequate funds for quality education of it school age children, or adequate mental health care for its afflicted citizens…?

Is it conspiratorial to ask of our Governor, State Legislature and our public agencies like Az Dept Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and Az Dept Water Resources (ADWR) to show “us” … that’s you and me …
in a clear, concise, understandable manner … where’s tomorrows WATER for Arizona…? Prove to us beyond a reasonable doubt that Arizona HAS both adequate water to support the growth anticipated and SAFE water..?

Oh, by the way … “we” … that’s you and me … establish the parameters for what qualifies as SAFE water.

Conspiracy is an agreement between persons to deceive, mislead, or defraud others of their legal rights, or to gain an unfair advantage. The aura of conspiracy is pervasive within our current system of government even though we may not choose to see or endorse it. Denying its existence will not make it go away. On the other hand, admitting its existence and then taking direct action to root it out quickly leads to a quite different paradigm. This is a paradigm where truth prevails and full, open, honest, timely disclosure and transparency live eliminating those dark secreted places where conspiracy breeds.

The question becomes … by which paradigm do YOU choose to live…?

I CONFESS … I’M A SUGAR JUNKIE … ARE YOU … FOLLOWING IS AN EYE OPENER BUT WE’VE ALL HEARD IT BEFORE … SO …?

This Common Food Ingredient Is As Addictive as Cocaine…? … Posted by Dr. Mercola | March 13/ 2010 …. Dangers of fructose called The Sugar Fix
Dr. Richard Johnson is professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, where he runs the kidney division and is in charge of transplantation and research in blood pressure. He has also written the best book on the market on the dangers of fructose called The Sugar Fix.
About 70 percent of his work involves research and, for a number of years, he has been studying the effects of fructose on the metabolic system in animals and cell culture, as well as in clinical studies.
Most of this research is focused on how fructose might cause obesity, high blood pressure, kidney disease, fatty liver, and other health-related problems.
The question was: What raises uric acid? It’s been known that meats and purine rich foods can raise uric acid, but it turns out that one of the most potent ways to raise uric acid is via fructose!
You probably already know that fructose is a sugar, but you may not realize is that it’s distinctly different from other sugars as it’s metabolized through very specific pathways that differ from those of glucose, for example, and through its distinct metabolic action, uric acid is generated.
In fact, fructose typically generates uric acid within minutes of ingestion. But let’s take a step back and look at what uric acid is, and how it’s linked to fructose consumption.
What is Uric Acid and How Much is Too Much? Uric acid is a normal waste product found in your blood. High levels of uric acid are normally associated with gout, but it has been known for a long time that people with high blood pressure, overweight, and people with kidney disease, often have high uric acid levels as well.
Interestingly, uric acid functions both as an antioxidant, and as a pro-oxidant once inside your cells.
So, if you lower uric acid too much, you lose its antioxidant benefits. But if your uric acid levels are too high, it tends to significantly increase inside your cells as well, where it acts as a pro-oxidant.
In the following statement, Dr. Johnson explains just how closely tied uric acid levels are to fructose consumption:
“If you give animals fructose, they develop diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and fatty liver. And in most of these conditions, if we lower uric acid, we can prevent many of these conditions, [although] not completely. So lowering uric acid seems to benefit some of the mechanisms by which fructose causes disease.
So a very important point is that if you take two animals and you feed one fructose and feed the other one the exact same number of calories but give it as dextrose or glucose, its only the fructose-fed animal that will develop obesity, insulin resistance, fatty liver, and high triglycerides, signs of inflammation, vascular disease, and high blood pressure.”
This bears out in humans as well. Over the last 20 years, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in fatty liver disease throughout the world, and studies done by Dr. Johnson and a group of researchers at Duke University showed that people who develop fatty liver drink a lot more soft drinks, and ingest far more fructose than the average person in the community.
How Much Fructose are You Consuming? It’s no secret that we are eating more sugar than at any other time in history. In 1700, the average person ate 4 pounds of sugar a year. By 1800, it was 18 pounds. By 1900 it was about 90 pounds.
Today, about 25 percent of all Americans consume over ½ pound of added sugars a day, according to Dr. Johnson’s research. That kind of consumption equates to more than 180 pounds of sugar per year! And it just so happens this statistic dovetails nicely with the statistics showing that one in four Americans is either pre-diabetic or has type 2 diabetes.

The two main sources of that sugar are high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and table sugar.
As a standard recommendation, I strongly advise keeping your TOTAL fructose consumption below 25 grams per day.
However, for most people it would actually be wise to limit your fruit fructose to 15 grams or less, as it is virtually guaranteed that you will consume “hidden” sources of fructose from most beverages and just about any processed food you might eat.
Since 55 percent of HFCS is fructose, one can of soda alone would nearly exceed your daily allotment. It is easy to see that anyone who is drinking three, and certainly four will easily exceed 100 grams of fructose per day,
Are Fruits Good or Bad for You? Keep in mind that fruits also contain fructose, although an ameliorating factor is that whole fruits also contain vitamins and other antioxidants that reduce the hazardous effects of fructose.
Juices, on the other hand, are nearly as detrimental as soda, because a glass of juice is loaded with fructose, and a lot of the antioxidants are lost.
It is important to remember that fructose alone isn’t evil as fruits are certainly beneficial. But when you consume high levels of fructose it will absolutely devastate your biochemistry and physiology. Remember the AVERAGE fructose dose is 70 grams per day which exceeds the recommend limit by 300 percent.
So please BE CAREFUL with your fruit consumption. You simply MUST understand that because HFCS is so darn cheap, it is added to virtually every processed food. Even if you consumed no soda or fruit, it is very easy to exceed 25 grams of hidden fructose in your diet.
While 25 grams may seem like a lot it is about one ounce. Yes one ounce actually has 28.5 grams. So it is my strong recommendation that most people keep their fructose from fruit consumption below 15 grams per day.
If you are a raw food advocate, have a pristine diet, and exercise very well, then you could be the exception that could exceed this limit and stay healthy. But in my experience that is far less than one in 1,000 people and probably closer to 1 in 10,000 people.
So please, carefully add your fruits based on the table below to keep the total fructose from fruit below 15 grams per day.

Glucose Makes Fructose Even More Potent! Fructose consumption clearly causes insulin resistance, whereas straight glucose does not. Insulin resistance can eventually lead to full blown diabetes.
Interestingly, glucose actually accelerates fructose absorption. So when you MIX glucose and fructose together, you absorb more fructose than if you consumed fructose alone.
This is an important piece of information for people who want to make a better effort at controlling their weight. With an epidemic of obesity going on in this country – two out of three people are overweight, and one out of three is obese – it has become clear that fructose is the single most important factor in this epidemic.
A Second Uric Acid Trigger In his studies, Dr. Johnson found one more common substance that also elevates uric acid levels, namely beer! It turns out that the yeast and all that’s used to make beer work together to make beer another powerful uric acid trigger.
The classic “beer belly syndrome,” is also quite similar to metabolic syndrome, and includes abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides), high blood pressure, and even insulin resistance.
While this concept is still new, pilot studies support Dr. Johnson’s findings, so beer consumption is also something to definitely consider when you’re watching your weight and trying to improve your health.
How to Restrict Fructose Consumption In his book, The Sugar Fix, Dr. Johnson reviews the effectiveness of reducing fructose intake to help prevent or treat obesity. He provides detailed tables showing the content of fructose in different foods – an information base that isn’t readily available when you’re trying to find out exactly how much fructose is in various foods.
The fructose content of fruits that I included above came from his work. The results of following the suggestions in this book are backed up by a controlled clinical trial, in which overweight people who followed the diet saw significant improvements in weight and blood pressure.
Reducing sugar in your diet can be tough for some people. After all, sugar is just as addictive as cocaine! But it’s possible, and Dr. Johnson provides helpful guidelines for doing so in his book.
It calls for following a very low fructose diet for two weeks, which has the effect of “rebooting” your system. Sugar activates its own pathways, and the more sugar you eat, the more sensitive you become to it, and the more your body starts absorbing. By cutting out sugar for a period of time, you can reduce the hyperactive metabolic system that has developed, and start over.
What Sweeteners Can You Use? It’s worth noting here that some alternatives that would appear healthy to most people are still loaded with fructose.
Agave syrup, for example, is being falsely advertised as “natural.” It is actually HIGHLY processed and is 80 percent fructose. The end product does not even remotely resemble the original agave plant and has virtually no nutritive value. For more information about agave, please see my previous in-depth report on this topic.
Likewise, honey is very high in fructose. Although its fructose content varies, it typically contains about the same amount as HFCS, or more. So even though honey contains many other beneficial nutrients, you’ll want to use honey very sparingly.
A far safer alternative is to use pure glucose. You can buy pure glucose (dextrose) as a sweetener for about $1 a pound. It is only 70 percent as sweet as sucrose, so you’ll end up using a bit more of it for the same amount of sweetness, making it slightly more expensive than sucrose—but still well worth it for your health as it has ZERO grams of fructose. Remember, glucose can be used directly by every cell in your body and as such is far safer than the metabolic poison fructose. Another option is to use the herb STEVIA

The Center for Arizona Policy: The Shadow Legislature … Posted: 10 Mar 2010 05:36 PM PST … Posted by Craig McDermott, cross-posted from Random Musings

They probably will consider the title of the post to be a compliment, even though it really is intended to merely point out that it is considered to be the most influential lobbying group working a legislature that is renowned for its willingness to be swayed by well-funded lobbyists.

From an article on AZCentral.com – The Center for Arizona Policy has impacted the daily life of nearly every Arizonan in some way or another over the past 14 years.

The Scottsdale-based conservative non-profit group has had a hand in banning same-sex marriage and raising the minimum gambling age to 21, requiring elementary-school students to recite from the Declaration of Independence and prohibiting late-term abortions.

Yet most Arizonans likely have never heard of it. The money quote (though the whole article is worth a read) – Kelly Damron of Phoenix said she got a lesson on the inner workings of the Legislature when she went up against the center and its bills to add regulations to human-egg donation and the use of human embryos. Damron is co-chairwoman of the Arizona chapter of the infertility group Resolve.

“It just appears that citizens have no say and that the legislators are being swayed by lobbying groups,” she said. “And if you’re not savvy enough, there’s nothing you can do to stop bad legislation. I didn’t feel like I had a voice.”

The article is actually pretty fair (not a hatchet job, not a puff piece), but you can be sure that one group won’t like it – the legislature itself.

They don’t mind selling out Arizonans to one group or another; they just don’t want the voters to know about it, especially during an election year. Later…

As Marianne Williamson noted … “our greatest fear is our light not our darkness that frightens us. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us”…

Our challenge then is the willingness to turn on the spot light allowing full, open, honest, timely disclosure and transparency and accepting nothing less.
