Expanding the use of full-body scanners at airports will improve the nation’s security, says the Obama administration.

It also will benefit the manufacturers of the equipment, including those lobbying on their behalf, like former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

Chertoff’s consulting firm, the Chertoff Group, represents OSI Systems, one of two companies licensed to sell full-body scanners to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

OSI, maker of the Rapiscan machine, garnered attention recently because its CEO, Deepak Chopra (no relation to the spiritual author and speaker), was invited to travel with President Barack Obama on his trip to India.

The arrangement demonstrated the closeness of the company with the White House, and the trip was a potential money-maker for OSI, now that India plans to install scanners at its airports in the wake of the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Chertoff has not been shy about exploiting terrorism incidents to his client’s advantage, appearing on television as an expert after the attempted bombing of the Northwest Airlines flight on Christmas Day 2009 to advise the nation that it should invest in full-body scanners for airports.

Sarah Palin drops 2012 presidency hint with staff visit to Iowa

Sarah Palin has dropped another hint of her intention to run for the White House in 2012, dispatching aides to scope out office space in Iowa, the first stop in the presidential race.

The “will she, won’t she?” speculation about Palin in 2012 has become a Washington parlour game – as well as generating free publicity for her new book, which goes on sale this week.

In the course of making arrangements for that tour, two aides organising Palin’s visit to Des Moines on 27 November told locals they were looking into office space and other logistical needs for the coming year, the Guardian has learned.

The book itself was widely seen as a sign that Palin was considering a run for the White House. She has said on a number of occasions that she is weighing her prospects with her family. In an interview with ABC television, she even said she could beat Barack Obama in an election.

Some of her staff now appear to be putting the pieces in place in case Palin does decide to run. One of the aides, who only eats kosher food, told a local rabbi he was looking into longer term arrangements in Iowa.

“He was looking to be able to accommodate the needs of those coming down looking to set up shop here for campaigning in the coming years,” said Yossi Jacobson of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in Des Moines.

Others in Des Moines suggested Palin might be seeking a base from which to solidify her power within the Republican party, after successfully campaigning for a number of conservative Tea Party candidates during the mid-term elections. “It will be more than just a book signing – I am sure,” said Jacobson.

The Iowa caucuses are the first stop in the presidential primaries, and can make or break a run for the White House. Obama’s win in Iowa catapulted him ahead of the early favourite Hillary Clinton, setting him up for victory in the 2008 Democratic primaries.

This time around, a number of Republican contenders have visited Iowa to gather support before the presidential nomination contest begins in February 2012.

Huckabee Tells Law-Makers to Ignore Court Rulings They Don’t Like

In a recent interview with right-wing radio host Steve Deace, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee claimed that lawmakers may flout court decisions they happen to disagree with:

A president has certainly got to respect a ruling of the court, but if the ruling of a court is wrong, and it’s fundamentally wrong, and you have two branches of the government that determine that it’s wrong, then those other two branches supersede the one. . . . The two branches of government, legislative and executive, have every right to make it clear to the Supreme Court that their interpretation is wrong.

And whether they do that by constitutional amendment to spell it out to the court, or by passage of further amplification of law, there are many means, I think, at hand to do that.

GOP “death panels” in Arizona

Countdown with Keith Olbermann dedicated its first two segments Friday nght to Arizona’s AHCCCS transplant controversy — budget cuts made by the Republican-dominated legislature and signed by governor Jan Brewer ending transplant coverage for people on AHCCCS because no insurer will insure them.

It was a cold cost-benefit analysis: so few people successfully obtain a transplant organ that only a “few” people will die as a result of not funding transplants.

Only the information provided to the legislature was flawed (false). (The state forgoes $15 million in federal Medicaid funds as a result of eliminating transplant coverage — to save approximately $5 million in state funding).

Jan Brewer is still sitting on top of approximately $30 million in discretionary stimulus funds that she gets to dole out and claim credit.

The state of Arizona is now making the decision to let people die because it does not want to pay, just as insurance companies have been doing for years.

The “death panels” that Sarah Palin falsely claimed were in the Affordable Care Act do exist in Arizona’s AHCCCS program for transplant patients.

And if our shadow governor, Sen. Russell Pearce gets his way, those death panels will be expanded to other areas when the state of Arizona opts-out of the federal Medicaid program. The poor will be on their own, left to die and to “reduce the surplus population.”
