John McCain gets a Senate challenger

Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.)  announced Tuesday that she will challenge John McCain for his U.S. Senate seat in 2016, giving the incumbent Republican a battle-proven challenger who has won several elections in a competitive congressional district.

“In Arizona we tell it straight, so let’s get right to it – I’m announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate,” Kirkpatrick said in a video announcement. “I respect John McCain’s service to our nation. I just believe our state’s changing. Arizonans should have a real choice who they send to the United States Senate."

Kirkpatrick was first elected to represent Arizona’s 1st Congressional District in 2008, the same year that McCain took his home state during the presidential election, 53 percent to Barack Obama’s 45 percent. Kirkpatrick lost her 2010 reelection bid but took the seat back in 2012. The district itself was tightly split that cycle: 50 percent voted for Mitt Romney while Obama took 48 percent of the vote.

Kirkpatrick’s Senate bid might be a recruiting win for national Democrats, but the party is now charged with finding a competitive candidate to run for Kirkpatrick’s congressional seat — and that could spell yet another potential hurtle for House Democrats. In March, Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Fla.) announced a bid for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio, making it much more difficult for Democrats to hold onto the competitive purple district.

Kirkpatrick is the first candidate in her party to enter the Senate race in Arizona, but she could face a Democratic primary challenge. Most notably, fellow Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) has been named as a potential top Senate candidate.

“Now, I’m not naïve. I know that Washington insiders are already trying to dig up dirt. But having grown up here, a little mud on my boots is part of life," Kirkpatrick said in her video.

McCain announced in April that he will seek reelection; but he could face a primary challenge of his own. As The Post has reported, McCain has faced frequent attacks from members of his own party who have called into question his conservative bona fides.

"Senator McCain welcomes Congresswoman Kirkpatrick to the race, and looks forward to running a vigorous campaign no matter who the Democratic nominee is," said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers.

You Wouldn’t in a Million Years Believe What’s Killing Off Dolphins

NEW ORLEANS (CN) – Lung and adrenal lesions in dolphins, and an increase in bottlenose dolphin deaths in the Gulf of Mexico, is likely linked to exposure to pollutants from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, according to researchers by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.

According to a report published Wednesday in the peer-reviewed online journal PLOS ONE, bottlenose dolphins in the northern Gulf of Mexico have been dying at unusually high rates since 2010.

This ongoing die-off includes the highest number of bottlenose dolphin deaths on record and coincided – not coincidentally, according to the study – with the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history.
