Amid mass protests nationwide, President Trump and his spokesman accused the media of understating the turnout for his inauguration

Saturday, January 21, 2017 6:46 PM EST

President Trump and his staff spent their first full day in the White House waging a bitter war against the news media over depictions of the crowd at the inauguration on Friday.

In a pair of angry public appearances on Saturday, Mr. Trump and his White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, excoriated the news media for what they said were deliberate efforts to understate the number of people who had gathered on the National Mall.

He claimed that Mr. Trump had drawn “the largest inaugural crowd ever,” but quickly acknowledged that there were “no numbers” to confirm it, noting that the Park Service does not issue crowd estimates.

…It appears in my life time I will witness a consequential transfer of political & social prowess from the East Coast (i.e. New York/Boston/DC) to the West Coast (Los Angeles/San Francisco/Seattle)… A harbinger game-changer as significant as the Pilgrim landing at Plymouth Rock…

…As the undisputed behemoth of the West Coast … California … is perfectly situated to wield a progressive unifying leadership role in opposition to the separatist, divisive leadership emanating from the “swamp” in DC…

State of Resistance: California in the Age of Trump

By Manuel Pastor, Danny Feingold / Capital and Main  ……For the past two decades, California has been on the cutting edge of social and economic change in America. Now, with Donald Trump about to enter the Oval Office, the Golden State is poised to take on a new role: leader of the anti-Trump resistance.

California’s frontline position in opposing Trump is not merely a reflection of its deep-blue politics. On many of the flashpoint issues expected to define Trump’s presidency, California has a tremendous amount at stake. As the new administration tries to reverse the significant gains made on immigrant rights, climate change, criminal justice and workers’ rights, to name a few subjects, many of the fiercest battles in the country will be fought up and down the state.

Can California lead the resistance to Trump’s right-wing agenda and continue to be in the vanguard of advancing progressive change? Yes – and in fact, the two are inextricably linked, both tactically and symbolically. In the months and years to come, California must become like the best sports teams, capable of playing defense and offense at the highest level.

Why California Must Lead    No state rivals California either in the dimensions of its population or economy. At just under 40 million people, California has more residents than the nation’s 20 least densely populated states put together. Its economy is the sixth-largest in the world, trailing only the U.S., China, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom.

California is also home to several of the nation’s most powerful and influential industries, including high tech and entertainment. Both Silicon Valley and Hollywood wield enormous economic clout, and are key shapers of consumer habits and cultural norms.

Why is this significant? Because California has the ability to exert enormous pressure on everything from markets and mores to politics and policy, a position it has ably demonstrated in its leadership role in addressing climate change, despite federal inaction.

Size and economic strength by themselves are not enough. But over the past 20 years, California has acquired another key comparative advantage: It has developed some of the most innovative social movements in the country – and exported them to cities across the U.S. These movements have secured rights for immigrants, boosted worker pay, protected LGBTQ Californians and pushed the state forward on addressing climate change. They will be called upon to use their organizing prowess to hold the line against Trump even as they continue to push the envelope of social and economic justice in California and beyond.

California advocates have succeeded in large part by mobilizing an incredibly diverse set of stakeholders. This will pay big dividends now, as very disparate groups of people – immigrants, Muslims, African-Americans, the poor, women, communities already suffering the effects of climate change – see their interests threatened by the Trump administration. The experience of working together across racial, ethnic, geographic and class lines will lend itself to the creation of even broader alliances – so broad that California could be a key base for the biggest and most diverse progressive coalition the nation has ever seen.

UPDATE: Canadians, French & British Denied Entry to the United States to attend Protest March

By Timaeus    ……The Guardian is reporting that numerous Canadian, French and British citizens have been denied entry to the United States because they intended to join today’s anti-Trump protests.  www.theguardian.com/…

At at least one border crossing, the first question they were asked by border patrol officers was “Are you anti- or pro-Trump?”  They were also all seriously harassed.  They were put into secondary inspection for hours, interrogated, fingerprinted, photographed, all their belongings and vehicles were pawed through, and they were told they would need visas to enter in the future.

I’ve been a U.S. immigration lawyer for 30 years, and my hands are shaking like leaves in a hurricane.  That’s outrageous!  By statute, Canadians are visa-exempt.  The border patrol agents have no authority to deny admission for political reasons!  French and British citizens also do not need visas under the Visa Waiver Program.  The claim that they will need visas in the future must mean that they were formally placed on a terrorist watch list!

This is incredibly un-American.  But under a fascist regime, the low-lifes with guns always turn ugly.

This happened at more than one border crossing, which suggests it was not just a few rogue officers but was coordinated from the top of Customs and Border Protection, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security.

…I am just a bit surprised there appears to not be even one individual who has “The Donald’s” ear who is at least whispering that routinely…

…If he pursues this course he is doomed and quickly…
