Baltimore cops admit to carrying toy guns to plant on unarmed suspects they might shoot

Leslie Salzillo  ………In days when Donald Trump inhales and exhales the news media, a lot gets missed.

This story sounds striaight out of a police TV series. Eight members of Baltimore’s Gun Trace Task Force revealed that a “handful” of the police officers reportedly carried fake guns in their patrol cars to plant on innocent people in case the cops mistakenly shot unarmed suspects. This is something no citizen wants to know, yet many have long-believed. The reveal came on January 23rd, which was Day 1 of the Baltimore police corruption trial. Vice reports.

The divisive and hateful path currently posed by our nation’s leaders leads only to our destruction

..The salient point in John Donne’s poem applies equally to a nation …  United States of America … and apparently we have forgotten the salient message of Lincoln … “a house divided against itself cannot stand”…

No Man Is An Island

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
Or of thine own were:
Any man’s death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.    John

EVIDENCE THAT RACISM AND SEXISM WERE KEY TO TRUMP’S VICTORY

A new analysis finds attitudes about gender and race were far better predictors of support for Trump than personal economic woes

TOM JACOBS…4 HOURS AGO  To the dismay of many, President Donald Trump has amped up his racist rhetoric of late, sending out angry, misleading tweets about Latin-American immigrants. Tufts University scholar Daniel Drezner argues this is his attempt "to ensure that his loyal base supporters are sufficiently energized to come out and vote GOP in the midterms."  "The 2016 campaign witnessed a dramatic polarization in the vote choices of whites based on (their level of) education," writes a research team led by political scientist Brian Schaffner of the University of Massachusetts–Amherst. "Very little of this gap can be explained by the economic difficulties faced by less-educated whites. Rather, most of the divide appears to be associated with sexism, and denialism of racism."

A massive for-profit prison healthcare provider is finally going to be held accountable for abuses

Rebecca Pilar Buckwalter Poza   …….Federal Magistrate Judge David Duncan heard arguments for and against sanctioning the Arizona Department of Corrections this week. ADC has been accused of permitting for-profit prison healthcare provider Corizon to provide healthcare so inadequate as to broach the question of cruel and unusual punishment—despite a 2015 settlement specifying benchmarks for improvement.

Arizona has placed the blame squarely on Corizon. The agreed-upon monetary penalties weren’t working! Well, no wonder: Corizon makes $400,000 a day from its Arizona contract, and monthly sanctions are capped at $90,000. Paying sanctions is cheaper than complying, and the state agreed to caps that mean the maximum fine is a drop in the bucket compared to profits. If it hadn’t, it would be entitled to $8.6 million from Corizon by October 2017.

Since the penalties weren’t working, ADC decided to create incentives for Corizon to comply, totaling a staggering $3.5 million. Corizon’s already earned $2.5 million of that amount, and, in the end, it could come out having received more in incentive payments than it lost in sanctions.

These latest revelations seem likely to fuel Duncan’s ire. Jimmy Jenkins, a reporter at KJZZ in Phoenix, called the updates “really stunning stuff.” Duncan had already announced that he’s considering imposing harsher oversight and a $1 million fine. Now, it looks like he may contemplate an even higher fine. Which would make sense given the amount of money at stake—and the gravity of the allegations against Corizon.
