Horrifying Lawsuit Claims Inmates at a Private Prison Were Forced to Work for Toilet Paper

An officer allegedly told one inmate to claim himself with his fingers.

A newly filed lawsuit is accusing CoreCivic, the largest private prison company in the United States, of forcing inmates to work for as little as $1 a day in exchange for being allowed to use toilet paper.

The Daily Beast reports that three immigrant detainees this week sued CoreCivic for allegedly making them work for poverty wages mopping floors and scrubbing toilets, with the threat that they would be denied basic necessities such as toilet paper, soap and toothpaste if they did not comply.

Two of the immigrant detainees — named in the lawsuit as Wilhen Hill Barrientos and Margarito Velazquez Galicia — are still being held at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. A third detainee, a man named Shoahib Ahmed, was released from the detention center after he gave up his asylum claim.

The lawsuit claims that guards at the facility often refuse to provide detainees with basic needs when asked.

“In one instance, Mr. Barrientos ran out of toilet paper and requested another roll from a CoreCivic officer,” the lawsuit says. “The CoreCivic officer told Mr. Barrientos to use his fingers to clean himself.”

The lawsuit also alleges that conditions at the CoreCivic detention facility are extremely poor, as it claims that its “shared bathroom is often filthy, to the extent that the pod residents at times have to plug or cover their noses to avoid the overwhelming and festering stench.”

Ryan: No way to avoid trillion-dollar deficits because of all the old people

Joan McCarter  ……..Daily Kos Staff……..2018/04/16 · 12:33

Speaker Paul Ryan wants you to know that it is not his fault at all that we’re going to have a trillion-dollar deficit. It’s the fault of old people. Because of course it is. It’s Paul Ryan.

"That was going to happen. The baby boomers retiring was going to do that," Ryan said on NBC’s "Meet the Press" of projections that the country will start running trillion-dollar deficits as soon as 2020. […]

"These deficit trillion-dollar projections have been out there for a long, long time. Why? Because of mandatory spending which we call entitlements," he said when pressed by NBC host Chuck Todd on Corker’s criticism.

Ryan, a former House Budget Committee chairman, said the Congressional Budget Office projects discretionary spending to increase by only $300 billion over the next decade and for total tax revenues to continue to increase.

"Mandatory spending which is entitlements, that goes to $2 trillion over the next decade. Why does it go to $2 trillion? Because the boomer generation is retiring," Ryan said.

Those pesky retirees, expecting to get all that money they spent into the Social Security and Medicare system back when they need it. They’re going to break us! And there’s nothing to be done about it. Nope, no way you can do anything to raise any money to counter all those people getting older.

Never mind giving the banksters and the corporations and the 1 percent $2 trillion in tax cuts. It’s as if taxes have nothing at all to do with the government’s revenues.
