Okay, so I am a little late with this.

Friend and colleague Sean W. Fleming posted this piece for Earth Day on the Princeton University Press (PUP) blog. He has given me permission to repost it here. Sean’s recent book, Where the River Flows, has been published by PUP.

spread a bit of Koch Bro$ magic du$t over his minions

… All  AZ Gov Doug Ducey had to do was spread a bit of Koch Bro$ magic du$t over his minions in our State Legislature and WOW … 20% education increase but he won’t reveal where is the $$$$$$$.

Hello —

On April 12, we announced a plan to increase teacher pay by 20 percent — and I’m proud to report, we’ve delivered. Raises are on the way to Arizona teachers.

The #20×2020 plan has been passed by the legislature and I was proud to sign it into law, providing a 20 percent boost in teacher pay over the next three years and a significant increase in flexible dollars to Arizona schools for new textbooks, technology, infrastructure, and support staff.

Once fully implemented in school year 2020, the plan will constitute an increase of more than $1 billion in education spending.

And this is important: The budget does not compromise essential state services to accommodate our teacher pay package. It maintains the state’s commitment to fund developmental disabilities, skilled nurses, Medicaid, critical access hospitals, the arts, food banks, Alzheimer’s research and higher education. It accomplishes all of this, without raising taxes on hardworking Arizonans.

Over these last several weeks, in particular, I’ve had the honor of hearing directly from our teachers and school leaders. Their input has shaped and improved this plan. I’ve been incredibly impressed by our teachers, and I am grateful for their dedication to providing every child a quality educational experience.

We will never check the box on public education, and it remains one of the state’s most important responsibilities. With our economy growing, there is no better place to invest our dollars.

Our teachers do amazing work inside the classroom, and they have earned this raise.

Thank you,

Doug

Trump threatens to use ‘the powers granted the presidency’ to end investigation

Mark Sumner Daily Kos StaffWednesday May 02, 2018 · 8:15 AM PDT

Donald Trump has previously used Twitter to attack the Russia investigation, Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former FBI Director James Comey. But on Tuesday morning, he seemed to be moving toward the final stages of Justice-is-what-I-say-it-is autocracy.

A Rigged System – They don’t want to turn over Documents to Congress. What are they afraid of? Why so much redacting? Why such unequal “justice?” At some point I will have no choice but to use the powers granted to the Presidency and get involved!

7:45 AM – May 2, 2018

Trump has built his case for this sweeping move on the basis of statements from his legal team. Not that legal team. The otherone.

John Dowd took a hike. Ty Cobb occupies space. Michael Cohen … is on notice. But as Tuesday morning’s tweets demonstrate, Donald Trump’s real defense is none of the above.

“The questions are an intrusion into the President’s Article 2 powers under the Constitution to fire any Executive Branch Employee…what the President was thinking is an outrageous…..as to the President’s unfettered power to fire anyone…” Joe Digenova, former US Attorney

In March, Trump talked with Digenova about being part of his official legal team. Word at the time was that Trump found the in-person Digenova lacked the simulated gold-plate “class” he looks for in his lawyers. Or maybe he has the wrong sort of facial hair. But since Trump sent Digenova back to Fox, it’s clear that his more vital legal team, the ones actually doing the job of shoring up Trump’s support and providing his base with appropriate talking points, is the legal firm of Fox & Friends.

NEW BOOK – A MUST READ! “The Russia Hoax – The Illicit Scheme to Clear Hillary Clinton and Frame Donald Trump” by the brilliant Fox News Legal Analyst Gregg Jarrett. A sad chapter for law enforcement. A rigged system!

After all, Trump isn’t expecting to face indictment before a court, no matter what Special Counsel Robert Mueller finds. The far more likely scenario would be that the DOJ sends the results to Congress, where Trump’s fate is in the hands of the majority. He doesn’t have to face a trial. Just the accolades of Devin Nunes and the freshly washed hands of Paul Ryan.

Rather than wait for the investigation to play out, Trump may well believe he’s better off simply crushing the investigation and moving on. Republicans have repeatedly demonstrated that they’re unwilling to protect Mueller. The Nunes-Meadows Russian friendship circle is actively attempting to impeach Rosenstein. Ryan has green-lighted every move to weaken the investigation and protect Trump.

There was no Collusion (it is a Hoax) and there is no Obstruction of Justice (that is a setup & trap). What there is is Negotiations going on with North Korea over Nuclear War, Negotiations going on with China over Trade Deficits, Negotiations on NAFTA, and much more. Witch Hunt!

Trump has laid out his case simply enough. He has important work to do. The investigation is “a hoax.” And he has the right to fire anyone.

He is signaling his willingness to act on that “right.” Trump thinks that everything that appears to go well is simply more fuel for his authority. At the moment he’s charged up by Korea. If the stock market was still high, Mueller would likely already be gone.

And he has his legal team to spread the propaganda that backs his play.

President Trump reversed his position on a payment to the porn actress Stormy Daniels, confirming that he reimbursed his lawyer for it

Thursday, May 3, 2018 8:12 AM EST

President Trump said on Thursday that he paid a monthly retainer to his former lawyer and fixer, suggesting that a payment to a pornographic film actress was not a campaign contribution — comments that appear to contradict his earlier statements that he knew of no such payment to the actress who says she had an affair with Mr. Trump.
