honor the man who reputedly discovered America (not)

It’s Indigenous Peoples Day. Do you know whose stolen land you’re on?

As a child, I was taught about the explorer Christopher Columbus, who allegedly discovered America. I still remember my elementary school teacher reading “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue” during story time in class. We were taught that he deserved the honor of having a holiday in his name. It wasn’t until years later that I learned how his legacy has been incredibly whitewashed. He didn’t even really discover America!

Fortunately, the number of states and municipalities rejecting Columbus Day in favor of honoring Indigenous Peoples Day, like Minnesota; Alaska; Vermont; and Somerville, Massachusetts, is growing. Hawaii celebrates Discoverers’ Day, and South Dakota has Native American Day. Honoring the millions of people who lived here long before and after Columbus’ non-discovery instead of the genocidal rapist himself feels like a no-brainer. It counters the act of forgetting and rendering indigenous peoples invisible.

One easy way for us to remember and honor indigenous peoples in our lives is by recognizing that the rest of us are living on stolen land. One way is to do it through land acknowledgment, which is an intentional and formal statement made in tribute to the land’s original inhabitants. A grassroots action network called the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture explains why it’s so important:

Acknowledgment is a simple, powerful way of showing respect and a step toward correcting the stories and practices that erase Indigenous people’s history and culture and toward inviting and honoring the truth. Imagine this practice widely adopted: imagine cultural venues, classrooms, conference settings, places of worship, sports stadiums, and town halls, acknowledging traditional lands. Millions would be exposed—many for the first time—to the names of the traditional Indigenous inhabitants of the lands they are on, inspiring them to ongoing awareness and action.

Not all of us are leaders of states, cities, or events, but we can do our part: look up whose land we’re on right now. Use it as an opportunity to consider how colonization has contributed to where we are today. People in North America can use the map on native-land.ca to find out whose native land they’re on, with information about those people. The site also features a useful guide to help visitors think critically about the information at hand.

The map says I am on the occupied land of the Gabrielino/Tongva Nation. The tribe has been indigenous to the Los Angeles Basin for 7,000 years. Yet the Gabrielino-Tongva write that they are one of two tribes that don’t have federal recognition, in spite of being state-recognized. They sued the government for it earlier this year.

Whose land are you on? What can you learn about their history and present?

Poll: Nearly half of millennial Democrats identify as socialist or democratic socialist

The Hill has an interesting report on a Buzzfeed and Maru/Blu poll conducted last month that seems to have slipped under the radar. The poll, which was conducted among millennial between the ages of 22-37, found that a nearly half of Democratic respondents identified as socialists in one way or another.

Almost half, 48 percent, said they would call themselves a democratic socialist or socialist, compared to 39 percent who said they identified as neither.

The percentages were lower among Republican millennials, with 23 percent saying they would call themselves a democratic socialist or socialist, and 71 percent saying neither.

This finding is, in many ways, not surprising. Previous polls have found an increasing share of Americans ready to embrace the label of socialism, particularly among the young. Still, the fact that nearly half of millennial Democrats are ready to openly identify as socialist, and nearly a quarter have an open mind to the label, speaks to just how much of a sea change has occurred in the political landscape over the last few years.

It’s also interesting that even a quarter of Republican millennial identify as socialists, and would be more likely to vote for socialist candidate. I wouldn’t read too much into it, but I do think it does indicate that the reemergence of socialism has in many ways, cut across the typical binary of American politics.

Other interesting findings from the poll:

·       More than half of Democratic millennials (53%) see Bernie Sander’s 2016 primary campaign as being positive in terms of engaging new people and promoting progressive ideas. Only a third (33%) saw Sanders as a spoiler or being too far to the left

·       Independent millennials were similarly positive on Sanders, with 43% seeing his impact as positive, and only 19% seeing it as negative.

·       A plurality of millennials (38%) feel we should abolish ICE or limit its scope to violent crimes, while fewer (33%) felt we should keep ICE unchanged or give it more resources

Many people who use Bluetooth technology to connect their devices may have no idea that exposure has been linked to brain tumors as well as dizziness, sleep issues, anxiety, depression, birth defects and more.  This is because Bluetooth emits the same RadioFrequency (RF) radiation as a microwave oven that cooks food.  Decades of research has already proven exposure to all sources of RF (cell phone and wireless WiFi radiation) is harmful.   The Radiation Health Risks website has some …

CONSERVATIVES UNMOVED BY CLIMATE REPORT The United Nations report warning of catastrophic global warming hasn’t shaken Republican climate hawks’ faith that market tweaks alone can deliver the unprecedented emissions cuts needed to avert disaster. [HuffPost]

Audit of global warming data finds it riddled with errors

Just ahead of a new report from the IPCC, dubbed SR#15 about to be released today, we have this bombshell- a detailed audit shows the surface temperature data is unfit for purpose. The first ever audit of the world’s most important temperature data set (HadCRUT4) has found it to be so riddled with errors and “freakishly improbable data”  that it is effectively useless. From the IPCC:Global Warming of 1.5 °C, an IPCC special report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C…
